Miss Underground

Miss Underground

How did you get started in photography?

I loved film photography when I was a teenager but fell out of love with it and it wasn't until I got my iPhone 4 that I was completely obsessed with it again!

What role has your iPhone and Instagram played in it?

My iPhone is the key to my love of photography because you carry it everywhere and the quality I can get from my phone always surprises me. Instagram gave me a platform to share my little world with the whole world.

How has London influenced your perspective?

I have a love of architecture and history that London has everywhere. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world.

Where are your favorite places to go in London?

I would say the Underground just because I am always on it, but above ground I love the Tate Modern.

What made you originally get into film photography when you were a teenager?

When I was a teenager I loved capturing the world around me but I also loved the process of film photography - The dark room, developing the negatives and then seeing the final shot printed!

What are you inspired by?

I challenge myself to take better pictures -- to work hard and to make people enjoy my Instagram feeds.

For those who don’t know, what made you start the Miss Underground account?

I was @Miss_Jess originally posting pictures of everything -- then I took a few Underground shots and got more likes than I ever had. I took a few more Underground shots and then a few normal shots and some of my followers were like, “NOoooo we want to see the Underground.” Soon, all I was doing was posting the Underground and Miss Underground was born!

What are your favorite station(s)?

I love Bank and Waterloo as they look like they are part of the set of Star Wars! And Bank has the best escalators.

How do you find ways to keep the Underground exciting for you?

I go to different stations and revisit old ones to recapture them - I am constantly learning about how to work with the artificial light.

What subways in other cities that you have visited have you liked the most?

I have been to Paris, Berlin and Munich and I loved the colors of Berlin Metro. I only had about an hour in the Metro at Munich so I want to go back!

Which city underground systems do you most want to go to that you haven’t been to yet?

I would love to go to the Moscow underground but Vienna and Prague are next on my list.

What do you like to share most on your  @Miss_Jess account? What is your favorite subject matter besides the underground?

@Miss_Jess is me - where I go, who I meet - I love to show everyone my little flat and what I get up to out of the tunnels.

When did you get involved with IGers London and how has that been so far?

I went along to the first ever Instameet with Instagramers London in March 2011 and helped organize the next few instameets before I took it over by the

summer. I love being part of a great community of people who meet up and then become friends in real life. It changes peoples lives! We are coming up to four years and it will be a great party!
